Advocaat coloured blocks in the city
sculptures, videos, photographs
Jan 19 2008 - Feb 23 2008
Mart House Gallery presents
with ‘Advocaat
coloured blocks in the city’ the first solo exhibition of the
young talented Lieke Snellen, graduated from the Piet Zwart Institute
(Rotterdam), in a Master of Fine Arts in 2007 In the beginning of
her career her work formed a response on a certain given space and
couldn’t
be seen separated of that given aspect. In the last two years her
work arrived at a certain point of autonomy. Not only the investigation
of the location is functioning as a starting point, also questions
about the basic concepts of sculpture, medium-specifity (a reference
to the famous art critic Rosalind Krauss) and display play an important
role. Movements of people are placed in a context of objects and
interior of premises. In this way Lieke Snellen creates layered works
with seemingly simplistic elements. Mart House Gallery is a space
with many possibilities in this context. Aesthetics and functionality
are the main points for the art, the space with the striking architecture,
as well as the acting people in that space. In this exhibition one
can see sculptures, photographs and videos, which form a combination
of artworks to illustrate this themes.
